Endau Rompin (Selai) (27th September 2009 - 28th September 2009)

Btw, the difference between hiking and trekking:
With hiking you set out to see nature for fun but when you go trekking you are setting out to reach a destination.

It was my first time taking the railway at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station even though I pass by this in the past while on my way to school. Oh and because I took the bus on the F1 weekend, I had pass by the F1 track and somehow they look lovely in pre-dawn time...

I have seen the tracks in Buona Vista countless of times, always wondering about the train that will run past it, thinking about the story of The Railway Children...

After a long delay, we finally reach Bekok. I guess delay is part and parcel of the life in Malaysia? I still remember my Berkelah Waterfall Trek where we spend a lot of time waiting and waiting...

This is the 4 wheel drive we took to reach Endau Rompin (Selai). But for now we had stopped for lunch at one of the driver's favourite haunt (because I see that the stall owner and the 2 drivers have a very close rapport).

Notice the egg cartons on top of the roof. It was for ventilation purposes if I did not remember wrongly. The problem when you procrastinate in blogging is you forgot what you had wanted to blog.. sighz.

The base camp - Lubuk Tapah where we actually had a room to sleep and toilets (Tandas) to shower. This is indeed a far cry from the Berkelah Waterfall Trek haha. But I do like both treks... Berkelah brought me closer to Mother Nature where bathing is done in the cool river water...

Endau Rompin retains the city sanity where you may not sleep with stars above you but you do have a sheltered hut which you can dump you bag in instead of carrying to the waterfalls. (This is a plus points because it was really very tiring and tricky to carry your bag and trek at the same time but I guess that is what makes trekking interesting).

And a nice cool river which you can dip your legs into. I do admit that I really miss the times where we dipped ourselves totally in the river.. maybe I really should stay with Mother Nature?

There are in total 4 waterfalls in Endau Rompin. On the first day, we decided to do a warm-up and head to
Takah Pandan

Our guide, an Orang Asli, guided us to the place. Unfortunately I do not know much malay and cannot have any conversation with him else I guess he would have lots of stories to tell me. The climb was pretty alright for me though some of them did not expect so much ropes climbing. Neither did I haha. But for warm-up, this is still bearable.

On the way back, I saw this "hurt" tree. I really don't understand why do people get so elated carving their "heartfelt" words on the tree. Why not try to tattoo on yourself instead. Sighz.

Headed back to read some scuba theory (couldn't concentrate though haha. Tried to play uno but it did not help. I guess I was just too restless. That I woke up real early... My roomie is a light sleeper and when I woke up, she followed too. We ended up taking photos of the heart-shaped moth, mosquito coil (lavender fragrance), the very tricky lock and practically anything else.

I borrowed the leech socks from LP because I read that there are a lot of leeches. It proved too effective as I did not even get to see any leech. At that time I felt a little bit disappointed because I don't want to be bitten but I want to see a leech. But having come back from Kranji HSC R&R, I decided I don't really fancy seeing worms... just too yucky... haha.

After breakfast, we headed to the highlight,
Takah Tinggi

On the way I took a lot of plant photos. But they know me, I don't know them haha.

XX pointed out the Gateway to Heaven to us haha. I suddenly felt like we were trekking to God's Kingdom.. If only...

The guide was showing me this plant and telling me some things. But I cannot remember anything now. Shucks!

Buttress roots! Reminds me a teeny bit of FF's corner.

The main highlight, Takah Tinggi. It is a powerful fall and is not recommended for swimming. Sad! (I read somewhere else that Takah Beringin which you can reach easily on your way back to the camp is more suitable for swimming though. Sadly due to time constraint, we did not visit it). Oh and for this photo, I managed to catch the bird in it heehee. Was playing with the burst mode. I love the skies, could just sleep there the day I guess... (Oh I love the night skies too.. saw stars after some eyes adjustment.. so serene...)

We took the 4WD back and visited the boss as it was Hari Raya Aidilfitri i.e. festive season for them. His house is lovely and he made it himself. When I was taking photo of his house, he came out to talk to me too.

I asked him about the sunbird nest which he is very proud of. He had 2 sunbird nests by the way. So lucky to be chosen :). The other nest he admitted was his work though haha.

After meal, it was more waiting as the train got delayed... But we did get home by night time. And unlike Berkelah Waterfall, I did not had to rush to office this time round... Indeed it was a much relaxed trip haha. When I came back from Berkelah, I thought I would never do another trekking trip. In a way, this is not a trekking trip, maybe a hiking trip. And it does makes me wonder, will I do it again? Partly because I don't like to step on grass but for such trips, this is an inevitable action. For the sake of embracing Mother Nature, do I really have to first trample Mother Nature???

Lost in Marina Bay

I haven't been to marina bay for a long long time. And it has totally changed. What greeted me was construction sites due to the IR, financial expansion and residential housing e.g. The Sail.



But something was familiar.

My workplace area. Hmm I never realise at the other end is marina bay. The phrase "So near yet so far" came into my mind.

And I took awhile before I finally figured out where the bus stop has been relocated (the drizzle prolonged the time taken.. and I suspect the drizzle affected my camera too... shucks)
Eventually I realised I must walk through this tunnel to locate the bus.

Totally different from my last memory of the bus-stop. Sometimes I really find Singapore is changing too fast for me even.

But yeah I still managed to make my way to Marina Pier and embark on my discovery to Semakau Landfill - Singapore's first offshore landfill and now the only remaining landfill in Singapore. Which I am posting separately in here.. so read here to find out more.

Heard it many times but it still doesn't hurt to repeat this video again.

And before I note down the important pointers, let me first comment that youtube has a lights up/ lights out feature too. Geez lately everybody into this lighting feature haha.

Have to admit the lights out help to concentrate better.

1) Limited Time
The world is indeed a cost-centric world. Everything is valued by cost… and not time. But guess what, cost can be earned back, time can never be retrieved back.

2) Inbox is not To Do list
To Do list is important and is highly recommended. But Inbox is not a To Do list. You should just clear your inbox and file them accordingly. Yeah I hate to see a long list of inbox too, other than my webmails which usually shouldn't contain any To Do stuff for me haha.

3) Filing system
Hmm totally agree. All paper that have been retained should be kept in one place. The alphabetical order is a tricky issue though. Probably categorising would be a better way?

4) Interruptions
Hmm late Professor Randy suggested turning phone calls into email and switching off the email alerts. Because we don't live our time thinking "Maybe I'll get another email!" I concur!

At the end, he suggested to revisit this talk in 30 days and see what have changed. If nothing has been changed then it will just be a pleasant hour spent together. But if I have changed things, then probably I would have gained more time to spend with the ones I treasure. Because ultimately in his words, "Time is all we have. And you may find one day you have less than you think."

For the record, I revisited the talk a year later and as long as it is in my blog, I will revisit it a few more times I believed. Even if it doesn't change much for me as what he suggested, I have already adopt those I like haha.

Sorrow muse

A short and sorrow muse after reading an email and an article.

"卖一次淫，可以帮助一名失学儿童；当一回二奶，可以拯救一所希望小学"

The email is on this teacher who ended up prostituting herself to save a school. Only because we live in such a money-centric world where everywhere is money talks. Since time immemorial, women are subjected to such lewd treatment of exchanging their body for monetary gains. It is both a blessing and a curse I suppose. Because to allow oneself to degenerated into such state requires a tremendous amount of willpower. And because in this society, such occupation is despised by the norms.

But why is it such money earn ought to deserve the society's backlash? The ladies still put in effort and time. They don't rob. They don't steal. They don't hurt the innocent to get what they want. They only hurt themselves. I always felt they are a pedestal higher than those criminals.

And this email on how this teacher had to earn money, and give it almost all so that a school can be improved upon. So that children can study. She never survived to realise her dream of building a concrete school with 2 PCs. She was killed by her client. She was only 21.

Is this a real story? Did it really happen in Gansu? I can't check the credibility but I feel that one would not cook up such a story. I hope not.

Anyway the article I read is definitely true. It is about 2008 in photographs. The Big Picture was putting news stories in photographs.

These photos reminded me of 女王的学长, on how photographers captured such moments to be able to show the world the ugly truth. Photos like page 1 photograph 5 and 6 shows how fragile life is.

Photos like page 2 photograph 7 and 21 shows how far we are from world peace. (And ya the question on why are you saving the person instead of photographing the person probably pops into some minds).

Of course photos like 16 reminds us how miraculous the world can be with events like solar eclipse.

So many photos, so many afterthoughts, so much emotions..

It can't sum up 2008 but it is amazing to know that while I lead a peaceful 2008, out in the world how are these people living their 2008... Take a look at these 3 pages.

Ghost Fleet

I was complaining to senior for not updating my news feeds recently and *plod* he delivered me this super worrisome news. Worrisome in an ironical way though. I left that industry a year ago when every analyst was saying their accounts will continue to be black, where everybody else financial statements are dangerously going to be coloured red. I left that industry known for its high bonus because I was seeking freedom.

So logically I should not be worried for them... but reading this line...

Thus the labours of today's Korean shipbuilders merely represent the completion of contracts ordered in the fat years of 2006 and 2007. Those ships will now sail out into a global economy that no longer wants them.

I really don't wish such a situation to happen though. The world is already in such a mess. 1 year after Lehman Brother's collapse is the topic of the Financial world (and practically everybody's world) these days. Maybe it really is a see-saw world out there... When I am down and you are up.... I guess I can only hope for the best...

p/s: Dailymail has an interesting feature. When I copied the text, it help me append a footer e.g.
'So far the shipyards are continuing to work, but the problems will start to emerge next year and certainly in 2011, because that is when the current orders will have been delivered. There have hardly been any new orders in the past year. In 2011, the shipyards will simply run out of ships to build.'

我一直在想为什么雪糕会走样，因为女王吃的雪糕一向来是杯的啊！

但今天，妈妈刚好也在讲走样的雪糕。。。突然让我在想起女王的哲学。。。

原来雪糕溶化了，真的会走样。。。
原来好马真的不能吃回头草。。。
原来当你不在执着这个心里终点，他将变成过客了。

我还是在舞台上旋转，但心里的终点，是该换了。
走样的雪糕让我想一想我心里的终点与个人的宗旨。
刚好我读到一篇文章。。

A personal vision/mission statement is the framework for creating a powerful life. Unlike a goal, a vision or mission rarely changes. It is a reason for our existence. It guides us in the decisions we make and the directions we take.

A personal vision is a picture of your true self in the future. It is the framework for the process of creating your life. Your vision is where you are headed, how you get there is your mission statement.

今天是第三天，也是最后一天了。哭了三天三夜，在剧场结束的那一刻，泪也干了。

三十二又十二月，女王买了生日蛋糕。坦白讲，我还真不太想要这种情形发生在我生命里。今年我没吹蜡烛，我想明年可以的话，连蛋糕也免了；毕竟会肥的。我这么说可能听起来像可怜自己，但我清楚地知道，我不是。因为我不后悔我两年前的选择。

I suddenly thought of a swimming theory that I came up with a few days ago. Do you count the number of laps you did, or the number of laps left? Because if you count the number of laps left, while it might motivate you, but will it spur you to do more? Is counting your achievements an optimist way of looking or pessimistic way? Or is an entirely different theory altogether?

2 months later, Kevin Carter was found dead on Wednesday night, apparently a suicide, police said yesterday. He was 33. An inquest showed that he had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

I remembered his photo too. It was highly controversial with a serious public blacklash on why the photographer could still calmly take photo and not help the girl. Should he? There is never a right answer. In photography, it is known every seconds matter. But in life-threatening situation, it is also known that every seconds matter. So, what should a photographer decision be?

我也知道这部戏不该看，因为一直在催婚。可是浪漫主义者就是执著。

我庆幸我到后来并没打算跟她讨论未来的事，因为我也知道“失去战友”是一定的事，毕竟我一直也要她幸福。

The Celtic Cross

The ten card Celtic Cross is the most common Tarot card layout I've ever come across. With this popularity there comes the problem of many variances of placement. Below is the one I use with my comments about the interaction of the placements.

In my opinion the Celtic Cross works best when used to answer specific questions. Remember to put some thought into the formulation of the question you wish to ask.
You can think of the Celtic Cross as divided into two sections: the Circle/Cross (six cards) on the left, and the Staff (four cards) on the right. (See diagram above.) The Circle/Cross simulates the Celtic cross found throughout Ireland. This cross has a circle linking the four perpendicular spokes. The circle and cross symbolize the joining of spirit and matter and the unity of all events in time.

Here is the spread:

Card 1:   The present
Card 2:   The immediate challenge facing the querent. You will often pull a difficult card here, which will indicate an obstacle that must be overcome. When you pull a "good" card here, examine it carefully because it will still represent a challenge.
Card 3:   Distant past, foundation. This card should indicate the root of the subject matter of the question
Card 4:   More recent past, including events. This will indicate events taking place, not necessarily directly connected to the question. For example, if a love affair going wrong Card 3 would show the root of why it is going wrong, whereas Card 4 will show something that recently happened to reflect this. You could see this as a "check comment" card - a way of seeing that the reading is sound.
Card 5:   The best that can be achieved. This is directly related to the question. Note that this may not necessarily gel against Card 10 - it depends whether you are able to get the best. However, a negative card here probably means that it is worth cutting your losses rather than putting any more effort into the situation.
Card 6: Immediate Future. This indicates events in the next few days or week(s). This reading does not cover months.
Card 7: Factors or inner feelings affecting the situation. Compare this against Card 1 in order to understand underlying forces/trends. If there is conflict between them this tends to indicate that the querent is going in the wrong direction.
Card 8: External influences. People, energies or events which will affect the outcome of the question and are beyond the querent's control.
Card 9: Hopes or fears around the situation. This may produce a card that confuses us badly. Always bear in mind that hopes and fears are closely intertwined, therefore that which we hope for may also be that which we fear, and so may fail to happen. Sometimes it is useful to draw a second card for clarification after the reading has been laid, and to read the two together.
Card 10: Final outcome. This is a fairly self explanatory card. However it is worth saying that if the card comes up somewhat ambiguous, once again it may be worth drawing three extra cards to clarify. These should be interpreted through the lens of Card 10. So if the card drawn is the Tower and we draw the Ace of Cups, Princess of Cups and Four of Cups in a reading about a relationship, the Tower would indicate that it is time to move on. The Ace of Cup suggests that a new relationship is promised with better things ahead. The Princess of Cups brings new love (and possibly pregnancy). The Four of Cups shows deep levels of contentment and happiness, and many options for progress.
