The flying fox, the world's largest bat with a wingspan of up to 1.5 metres, can be found on Pulau Ubin, one of the islands off mainland Singapore. <-- Sad that I have never been to Pulau Ubin still...

Singapore is a stopover point for thousands of migratory birds travelling the East Asian Flyway. <-- Nice! I tend to see a flock of birds flying sometimes. Once was a very nice V formation... the other was some formation but I can't remember

The Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in Singapore contains more species of trees than the entire North American continent. <-- Hmm time to visit Bukit Timah again??

The fastest selling book of all time in Singapore is Hello Chok Tong, Goodbye Kuan Yew: The Untold Story. Written and drawn by political cartoonist George Nonis, it sold 40,000 copies in two months. <-- How come I didn't know this book exists

The highest grossing locally made movie of all time is Money No Enough, raking in S$6.02 million in 1998. <-- I have the vcd, and it is authentic k. Always support local goods!

The most common Chinese surnames in Singapore are Tan, Lim and Lee. <-- hee hee

无语问苍天 - 旋转木马

Saw 无语 comics today and find it interesting. So long as the carousel horse is happy to just go round and round the merry circle, nobody can affect its mood.

I thought of going round and round my life too... But sometimes I wish to feel the wind, feel the freedom. I was offered a chance to step out of my comfort zone today... but I think I will still give a negative answer to them tomorrow. End up, I guess I'm still the carousel horse.. hopefully one day, I will break free from this merry circle.

It’s About Time (Denver/Hardin)

There's a full moon over India and Gandhi lives again.
Who's to say you have to lose for someone else to win?
In the eyes of all the people, the look is much the same,
for the first is just the last one when you play a deadly game.
It's about time we realize it, we're all in this together.
It's about time we find out, it's all of us or none.
It's about time we recognize it, these changes in the weather.
It's about time, it's about changes, and it's about time.

There's a light in the Vatican window for all the world to see
and a voice cries in the wilderness and sometimes he speaks for me.
I suppose I love him most of all when he kneels to kiss the land,
with his lips upon our mother's breast, he makes his strongest stand.
It's about time we start to see it, the earth is our only home.
It's about time we start to face it, we can't make it here all alone.
It's about time we start to listen to the voices in the wind,
it's about time and it's about changes and it's about time.

There's a man who is my brother, I just don't know his name.
But I know his home and family because I know we feel the same.
And it hurts me when he's hungry and when his children cry.
I too am a father, and that little one is mine.
It's about time we begin it, to turn the world around.
It's about time we start to make it, the dream we've always known.
It's about time we start to live it, the family of man.
It's about time, it's about changes and it's about time.
It's about peace and it's about plenty and it's about time,
It's about you and me together and it's about time.

Author's Note : This is a draft post for very long... because until now I still have not got to hear this song... my friend, when can you let me hear this song???

Stressed Rambling

I usually don’t tell people if I’m stressed. Sometimes, when my brain shut down, and I have zoned out, my group mates thought I’m stressed. I’m unsure if I was stressed as my brain has left my body and did not communicate its emotions to me anymore.

In fact I think I don’t even know when I’m stressed. But I know whenever exams come; I started playing all kind of online games. But no games can get my full concentration. I get bored very easily. I guess that is a sign that I’m stressed and trying to de-stress.

And yesterday, I frightened a classmate with my behaviour. Ever since I took Genetic Algorithm, I think I feel doubly lost. I don’t mind doing programming if I know what I’m doing. But for this programming assignment, I have no API to follow. Google fails to assist me either. For every Evolver function I tried to use, I had to trial and error and second-guess.

Right from the beginning, I never promise much on this assignment. I keep stressing I will only try my best. And every time I deliver the end product to my group mate, he will ask for more complex things. I guess his latest request might be the reason for my emotional “outburst” yesterday. After he told me that our adaptive GA should be more proactive in trying to find homogeneity before changing the mutation rate and crossover rate, I think my whole heart sunk. It means I need to redo the trial and error process again.

Maybe is because I never told them how tough it is to write this program. But I don’t want to do that also. And I know he appreciate what I deliver too. Just as I appreciate his feedback. Being so lost, not knowing what I’m doing; at least I have somebody to guide me, to push me on the right track. He is someone who tries to deliver the best. Blame it on my clumsiness, for I am unable to keep up with his tracks.

The whole day was then spent stoning. I was just staring at the screen when another classmate MSNed me. He asked me how my GA and DMML projects are. And I freaked him out by typing stuff that I am so tired and I want to quit and I want to give up. Basically it was my hands typing. Because I was still in stoned mode, so no brain processing was done actually. I even went as far as to say I don’t want to meet him to talk about it, just want to sleep and never wake up.

Anyway I did wake up and started talking to him more logically. But I think my abnormal behaviour had already freaked him out. Too bad the damage is done. “p

But because of this abnormal behaviour, I was introduced to Onimusha soundtracks, I think it is a worth deal! It sounds like the genre of music I like. And the game looks interesting but well I do not have a PS2 so don’t bother thinking about it haha. I was supposed to feel motivated (the aja aja fighting mood) after hearing this soundtrack, so I have to see what is my mood today.

Actually I think I will be ok today, because I already penned out my emotions. And really, I am not grumbling about my group mate. In fact, I admired his tenacity to deliver as accurate model as possible and hope to have half of his determination.

Aja Aja Fighting! But when I look over the GA project and see a DMML project and 3 exams and 22 days left, I think I start to feel the freaked out syndrome stirring in my body again…. Hee hee!

Colosseo

My dad sent me an email on some Rome sight seeing spots. Of all the photos, I'm most fascinated by this picture.

It is the well known Colosseo or Colosseum, the most spectacular extant edifice of ancient Rome. It was designed to hold more than 50,000 spectators for gory entertainments such as combats between wild beasts and gladiators. And I guess it is a must visit site for tourist.

The reason why I'm interested in this building is because of the top floor. Somehow it intrigued me... I did not recall seeing this arch when Belle and Sam were looking for each other round the Colosseo. If I did, I most probably would be too fascinated by it to notice about the "lovebirds".

Oh and maybe it is indeed nice to play the fate game around this building...

The Butterfly And The Flower

Yesterday a friend was telling me that flower and butterfly comes together. I was wondering why I find it familiar. Then I realised that yesterday, I had received an email titled "The Butterfly and The Flower". It was a powerpoint presentation asking you to trust God.

In this presentation, a man had asked God for a flower and a butterfly. But God gave him a cactus and a caterpillar. The man did not understand why initially but did not question God because he knows God is busy. After some time, he went to check on his request that he had left forgotten. The ugly cactus had turned into a beautiful flower. And the unsightly caterpillar had metamorphosed into a colourful butterfly. He realised that God always does give you what you need at the appropriate time. And that Today's thorn is Tomorrow's Flower.

The slide was from this site : www.tommyswindow.com

Usually I will not pay much attention to such slides, just watch and archived the mail. Maybe because of the blue butterfly and the blue flower in the blue background, and a phrase from a friend... and a question?

How about crossword puzzle?

A few days ago, I read this article “Crossword Puzzle Man” by Hayley Linfield from Reader Digest April 2006. This man is a common sight on the subway in Toronto. He has a crossword puzzle with him. He offers the crossword puzzle to the passengers. He is like a child asking an adult for help in his puzzle. He usually laughs for no reason. He does not speak. He is usually rejected by the busy commuters.

On a particular day, as usual, he looks for someone to help him with his puzzle. He approached a wealthy looking mid aged lady. The author believed that this lady will reject him, will be disgusted by him. But if the lady had really declined helping this crossword puzzle man, would I still be reading this story?

This lady smiled at him, asking how is him. He laughed. She saw his crossword puzzle. She asked is it he wanted help in his crossword puzzle. He laughed and thrust the puzzle closer to her. After looking at the first clue, she told him the answer. He laughed. She asked if he knows that answer and spelt the answer for him. He laughed and gave her the puzzle and a pencil. She wrote it in for him. He waited. She continued with the second clue. And it continues till she needed to alight.

The author says that after the lady left, he look around to see the commuters. They were smiling. Maybe they felt amused. Maybe they felt compassionate. Or maybe they felt admiration for the lady. The author concluded that
“Good Samaritans do not pick and choose whom they help. They offer assistance to anyone.’

After reading the article, I kept it in mind. But it did not occur for me to blog it till today. I decided to visit my friend’s forum because he complained I did not post anything. I went to his Madness Chatter corner. And a topic interested me. The topic is Sad Singaporean. The guy who posted this commented that Singaporeans put on a sad or expressionless face most of the time. He felt sad by this sight. And he tried to give them a greeting smile. But after one week, only 3 person smile back. A little boy, an old man and a cheerful guy. Someone asked him to try something else other than a smile to see if Singaporean will brighten up. I remembered this article and replied asking him to try a crossword puzzle.

And I remember 小土 article on 笨猪…

Bflygal's comment : I heard Guo Mei Mei's version yesterday, but I guess I still want to find the original singer (when I have time bah)... just that this line "爱是你眼里的一首情歌" haunts me frequently. I remember the first time I recalled this line, I had just woken up and was preparing to go to work or something. Weirdly, I did not even hear the song the previous day.. in fact I don't even remember when I ever heard this song because it is not the type of song to be played frequently on radio. On and off, this line will visit me out of the blue. Until yesterday when I happened to hear Guo Mei Mei's rendition of this song... Finally, I got to hear the whole song.

Osteoporosis

I attended a talk on osteoporosis yesterday but I kind of drag myself there because I’m mentally tired. Anyway the doctor shared some interesting facts that I went to research further.

Osteoporosis literally means 'porous bones'. Osteoporosis results in hip fracture and vertebral fracture.

Hip fracture results in
- 26% mortality
- 9% bed ridden
- 24% wheel chair bound.

Vertebral fracture results in
- disability
- physical deformity
- high risk of pneumonia (due to hunched back, lungs unable to expand properly to take sufficient air resulting in pneumonia).

So what are the risk factors for Osteoporosis?
The non modifiable risks are
- history of fractures
- low body weight
- older age

The potential modifiable risks are
- excess alcohol
- cigarettes
- drugs
- lack of exercise
- menopause

Currently, there is no blood test or symptoms that can identify Osteoporosis. A bone mineral density (BMD) test is the best way to determine your bone health. BMD tests can identify osteoporosis, determine your risk for fractures (broken bones), and measure your response to osteoporosis treatment. BMD tests provide doctors with a measurement called a T-score, a number value that results from comparing your bone density to optimal bone density. When a T-score appears as a negative number, it indicates low bone mass. The more negative the number, the greater the risk of fracture.

Other than BMD, there is another tool one can use to assess oneself. This is called the Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA). There is another tool for the Caucasians called the Osteoporosis Self-assessment Tool (OST).

OSTA is just a simple formula of age minus weight.
If difference is more than 20 - high risk
If difference is 0 to 20 - moderate risk
If difference is less than 20 - low risk

So what should we do to prevent osteoporosis?

Until the age of 30, bodies will build and store bone efficiently. Thus one should make use of this time frame to have your daily intake of calcium. Calcium taken with Vitamin D leads to better absorption of the calcium.

Teenage girls need about 1000mg calcium daily for their growing bones. Beyond the teen years, a daily intake of 800mg is recommended. You can get calcium from milk, soybean drink, fortified cereals, yogurt, sardines, ikan bilis, kailan and tofu.

As for Vitamin D, other than getting it from sunlight, you can get it from fatty fish and fish oils e.g. cod liver oil, salmon, mackerel, sardines, liver and egg yolk. Although there is a high health risk associated with consuming too much vitamin D, it is not likely to happen through diet alone unless you routinely consume large amounts of cod liver oil.

Vitamin D toxicity can cause nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, and weight loss. It can also raise blood levels of calcium, causing mental status changes such as confusion. High blood levels of calcium can cause heart rhythm abnormalities, impaired kidney function and decreased absorption of other minerals.

Thus it is best to take calcium and Vitamin D moderately.

Although it is best to consume your calcium from natural sources, you can still obtain the necessary from daily calcium supplement with vitamin D and Bisphosphonates (eg. Fosamax, Actonal) which is a class of drug to strengthen bone and treat osteoporosis.

Lastly, make your home trip-free. By preventing yourself from falling, you will reduce the risk of incurring fractures and losing bone mass.

Still Moving On…

Something else decided to move on too… something that we are very used to see in our receipts. Indeed Goods and Service Tax has decided to change its number to 7%.

Economist has likened the raising of GST to 7% to first making a person sick, then trying to heal the person. The reason is because by raising the GST, the one who suffers most are the low-income group.

When GST was first introduced, everybody make a big hoo-ha but after awhile they accepted it. Then when it raised from 3% to 4% to 5%, other than “panic” stocking, more complaints, Singaporeans did nothing much. Soon we got used to seeing the 5% GST in the receipt.

And now GST decided to move to the 7% mark. Now we have blogs to comment. Now we have forums to vent. Now we have more talkshows to voice out. Now we have more Generation Y people who are affected because we are no longer the teenagers whose expenses were paid by our parents many years ago. We have grown up and are now paying for our expenses.

I’m indeed curious how Singaporeans would react to this news this time. Will there be a different reaction compared to April 1997? Are we going to complain that GST should not raise or are we going to accept that this is required for growth. Is this helping the lower income group?

Seriously, who knows? Every action has a reaction, thus it might be good for Singapore, and it might also be bad for Singapore. What is confirmed though is GST has decided to move on. And it will announce its confirmed moving date on the 15th February 2007. Guess it wanted to celebrate its Valentine day as the fondly remembered 5% GST.

Will Planning

This is a long overdue post. A few weeks ago, I had attended a talk about Will planning. It is said that if you did not make any will, then the Intestate Succession Act (for Singaporeans) will help you distribute your assets when you depart.

This act contains 9 rules which are rather wordy and tough to understand. The lawyer, Ms. Sunita Sonya Parha (from S. S. Parhar & Co.) presented the Act in a simpler table which I shall share with you.

Married with no children or living parents : 100% to spouse
Married with children : 50% to spouse & 50% to children
Married with no children but with living parents : 50% to spouse & 50% to parents
Not married : Equally to parents
Not married with no living parents : Equally among brothers & sisters, and children of deceased brothers & sisters
Not married with no parents and no siblings but with living grandparents : Equally among grandparents
Not married with no parents, no siblings and no grandparents : Equally to uncles & aunts
Not married with no parents, no siblings, no grandparents and no uncles and aunts : Government

Other than this table, she told us a story which has an interesting morale.

Imagine there is a newly wed couple who is going for their honeymoon. Unfortunately they met with an accident and both died. The gentleman is 32 years old and he left a brother and his grandparents. The lady is 31 years old and is survived by her parents. What would happen to their asset?

All of us thought that the gentleman’s family will get the gentleman’s asset and the lady’s parents will obtained the lady’s asset. Unfortunately that is not the case. In court, the judge will actually ask “Who die first?” What seems like a ridiculous question is actually a logical question because of the procedures we have to follow. If you are clever, by now you would have guessed the reason for the question.

Anyway in an accident, nobody knows who die first. Thus the next question the judge will ask is “Who is older?” Logically the older person died first. So in this context, this gentleman die first. Based on the first rule, all his assets will be bequeathed to his wife which was supposedly alive (because the law says that the gentleman die first).
After the necessary is done for the gentleman’s part, it is easier to distribute the lady’s assets. Everything will be willed to the lady’s parents. Amazing right! This gentleman must have loved his in-law a lot.

Now that we came to the end of the story, imitating Under One Roof’s Tan Ah Teck’s golden question - “What is the morale of the story?”

The morale is to marry someone older than you! Of course my boyfriend says if everybody follows that adage, then nobody gets married. Well if you love your spouse or your in-laws a lot, you can ignore that adage also.

Peanuts - Love mankind

This comic strip makes me laugh. Because I actually think like him, not the part about being doctor. Is the part that “I love mankind! It’s people I can’t stand!”

When I was younger, I might have written an essay about my ambition is to be a nurse because that was easier to write … but I have never thought about being a doctor. What I thought of was to be a forensic pathologist though. That shows how much I can’t stand people because I rather “operate” on dead corpses. That and the fact I used to read too much detective stories and that I actually tend to choose the path least taken… (other than the glamour you find on those TV shows, I don’t think many people would like to be a coroner). Afterall you need to be well versed in Law and Medicine for this specialisation.

And please don’t ask me to sit …

Hacking Movies

Yesterday I was reading a past issue of Computer Times and came across the article where they discussed about hacking portrayed in movies.

They named a few not so good, the known one being Hackers (1995) and Swordfish (2001) because of the colourful graphics. Mission Impossible (1996) was also in the list because of the fake email address [Max@Job #:14] that Ethan Hunt was sending to. Haha, that was indeed funny because when I first taught my parents how to use email, they always could not recognise a valid email. Imagine emailing to www.abc@hotmail.com because they mix up the web url with email address. But now they no longer make such mistake.

The good ones were the Matrix series because Trinity used nmap & another program which was fictitiously called “sshnuke” meant to exploit SSH.

Anyway I wrote this post because while reading that article, I was actually watching TVB Net Deception. And I thought about the password cracking screen that is shown when Wong Hee or Jack Wu were trying to hack and it is quite realistic. Oh I read that there was the webcam spying part too, which is also from an actual case. Too bad I missed that part because I was home late.

And I started thinking how many Chinese movies/TV serials dealt with hacking theme? How many were realistic? How about Singaporean productions, did we ever delve on this topic too? The problem is I don’t seem to have any deep impression on Chinese movies or TV series.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Just watched this movie and find it very entertaining. The main theme is to tell everybody that candy may not have any added value in life, candy may be sweet and addictive, but candy should never replace your family.

A one-liner... and now to post the cute little songs that Oompa Loompa sung...

(Augustus Gloop) - The Greedy Boy
OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPADEE DOO
I'VE GOT A PERFECT PUZZLE FOR YOU
OOMPA LOOMPA, DOOMPADAH DEE
IF YOU ARE WISE YOU'LL LISTEN ME
WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU GUZZLE DOWN SWEETS
EATING AS MUCH AS AN ELEPHANT EATS
WHAT ARE YOU AT GETTING TERRIBLY FAT
WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL COME OF THAT
I DON'T LIKE THE LOOK OF IT
OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPADEE DAH
IF YOU'RE NOT GREEDY YOU WILL GO FAR
YOU WILL LIVE IN HAPPINESS TOO
LIKE THE OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPADEE DO
DOOMPADEE DOO
Augustus Gloop
Augustus Gloop
The great big greedy Nincompoop
Augustus Gloop, so big and vile, so greedy foul and infantile
Come on, we cry, the time is ripe to send him shooting up the pipe
But don't, dear children be alarmed,
Augustus Gloop will not be harmed,
Augustus Gloop will not be harmed
Although of course we must admit, he will be altered quite a bit
Slowly wheels go round and round, and cogs begin to grind and pound
This greedy brute, this louces ear,
is loved by people everywhere,
for who could hate or bare a grudge against a luscious bit of fudge?

(Violet Beauregarde) - The Winner
OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPADEE DOO
I'VE GOT ANOTHER PUZZLE FOR YOU
OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPADAH DEE
IF YOU ARE WISE YOU'LL LISTEN TO ME
GUM CHEWING'S FINE WHEN IT'S ONCE IN A WHILE
IT STOPS YOU FROM SMOKING AND BRIGHTENS YOUR SMILE
BUT IT'S REPULSIVE, REVOLTING, AND WRONG
CHEWING AND CHEWING ALL DAY LONG
THE WAY THAT A COW DOES
OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPADEE DAH
GIVEN GOOD MANNERS YOU WILL GO FAR
YOU WILL LIVE IN HAPPINESS TOO
LIKE THE OOMPA LOOMPA DOOMPADEE DO
Listen close, listen hard
The tale of Violet Beauregarde
This dreadful girl she sees no wrong
Chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing, chewing all day long
Chewing, chewing all day long
Chewing, chewing all day long
Chewing, chewing all day long
She goes on chewing till at last
Her chewing muscles grow so fast
From her face her giant chin
Sticks out just like a violin
Chewing, chewing all day long
Chewing, chewing all day long
Chewing, chewing all day long
Oompa Loompa, Oompa Loompa, Oompa Loompa, Oompa Loompa
For years and years she chews away
Her jaws get stronger every day
And with one great tremendous chew

Veruca Salt, the little brute
Has just gone down the garbage chute
And she will meet as she descends
A rather different set of friends
A rather different set of friends
A rather different set of friends
A fish head for example cut
This morning from a halibut
An oyster from an oyster stew
A steak that no-one else would chew
And lots of other things as well
Each with its rather horrid smell
These are Veruca's newfound friends
That she will meet as she descends
These are Veruca's newfound friends
Who went and spoiled her
Who indeed? Who pandered to her every need?
Who turned her into such a brat?
Who are the culprits, who did that?
The guilty ones - now this is sad
Are dear old mum and loving dad.

The most important thing that we've ever learned
The most important thing we've learned as far as children are concerned
Is never, never let them near a television set,
or better still just don't install the idiotic thing at all.
It rots the senses in the head
It kills imagination dead
It clogs and clutters up the mind
It makes a child so dull and blind
He can no longer understand a fairytale, in fairyland
His brain becomes as soft as cheese
His thinking powers rust and freeze
He cannot think, he only sees
Regarding little Mike Teavee, we very much regret that we
Shall simply have to wait and see
We very much regret that we
Shall simply have to wait and see
If we can get him back to size
But if we can't
It serves him right!

Towards the end, there is this phrase... very meaningful.
IF YOU WANT TO VIEW PARADISE
SIMPLY LOOK AROUND AND VIEW IT
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO, DO IT
WANT TO MAKE THE WORLD
THERE'S NOTHING TO IT
THERE IS NO LIFE I KNOW
TO COMPARE WITH PURE IMAGINATION
LIVING THERE
YOU'LL BE FREE
IF YOU TRULY WISH TO BE

Walking Fitness Test

Source : Health Promotion Board, "Exercise," Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2006, Tunturi

After walking that 2 km test that day, I went to do some research and finally decided to present my findings here (so that I can refer to when I participated in the next walk).

2 km walking test is to test the fitness level of a person. The idea is to walk 2 kilometers as fast as possible. The time spent and the heart rate at the end of the distance will be recorded.

The physiological fact is that the fitter you are, the faster your pulse recovers to the normal level after exercise. The maximum heart rate (beats per minute) for an individual is approximately 220 minus age. To improve aerobic capacity (VO2 maximum), exercise should be performed at an intensity that produces a heart rate of at least 70 percent of this maximum. VO2 is the measure of the maximum of oxygen that can be taken in and processed during exercise.

For a 20-year-old, for example, the maximum heart rate is 220 - 20, or 200. The heart rate should rise to at least 140 (70 percent of 200).

Although BMI should not have a direct relation with the heart rate, it is computed as well during this test to get the overall picture.
BMI = Weight (kg) / Height^2 (m)

BMI (kg/m2) for Singaporean Adults :
27.5 and above = High Risk
23 – 27.4 = Moderate Risk
18.5 – 22.9 = Low Risk (healthy range)
Below 18.5 = Risk of nutritional deficiency diseases and osteoporosis

Moving On

This phrase came into my mind when I reached Clementi today. Today, I decided to take MRT to Clementi, and maybe have Mac’s breakfast if time permits. Imagine my shock to see the bus interchange has been relocated from 29th Oct onwards. Too shocked to see such a major change, I wandered randomly before ending up at the bus stop that I knew my bus will pass by. Coincidentally, the bus came and I boarded it.

On the way to school, I kept thinking about this topic – Moving On. Many years ago, I refused to move on, staying put at the same spot and got terribly hurt for a couple of months. Finally I decided to move on…

Then when I graduate, and had to shoulder new responsibilities, I started to feel the need to change again. At that time, I saw a poster saying “The Only Constant Is Change”. I felt it is a sign for me to grow up.

And all these years, I thought I was really moving on. But lately, I realized either I had been moving too slowly, or the surrounding is moving too quickly. I felt breathless at the changes I’m facing, I felt unable to catch up with life’s footsteps. And once again, I started doubting the future. Is destiny really leading me correctly? I guess I need to figure out the rhythm again, else I will become an out of sync dancer again.

The radio is now playing one of the Goong’s song again… Just realized the Chinese name is 我真的受伤了(by 王菀[wan3]之)…

碧与艺术餐厅

《我报》 Wow! Wow! Hunt clue for today was
‘王’先生和‘白’小姐,坐在‘石头’上。

Haha, seeing this phrase brought me back 10 years ago, in a particular Chinese lesson, where my Chinese teacher Miss Lee was teaching us the word 碧. And a joke was created. A joke that left this word deeply etched in my mind.

On another column was an article about NUS Arts canteen. There have been a series of writers writing about their fond memories on this canteen. The taste of the food, the aroma of the food, the pricing of the food, the stall holder who man the stalls, the atmosphere of the canteen which makes up their memories of this canteen.

I have fond memories of the Arts canteen too, although Science canteen would really be a place I miss most because I spend more time there. I remember walking so far just to eat in Arts canteen when I’m sick of Science canteen food. I remember how we used to find Arts canteen a haven. I remember how we used to packed our dinner from Arts canteen and sneak it into the library to eat. But now the library has changed. And soon the canteen will change.

Last semester, I went back to eat in Arts canteen with my classmates a few times. But the feeling is different. This group of classmates are not from my undergraduate days. And the people I used to hang out in Arts canteen, I have lost contact with most of them.

Maybe one day, there will be an entry of me reminiscing of my memories with BizAd canteen. And I do wonder at that time, will I lose contact with my current group of classmates too?

Billionaires' Horoscope

“My Paper” financial article is an article I usually don’t read. So why did I read today’s article. Because it says that 12% of the billionaire is Virgos and the most notable examples are Warren Buffet (Berkshire Hathaway) and Larry Ellison (Oracle).

Of course this captures my attention. Not because I will become a billionaire soon but because it is said that Virgos do not chase for wealth. They only chase for perfection. And because they are not greedy, they can make wise decision in their investment. Well the truth is money really does not matter to me, just that I need it for survival.

Anyway the next 8% comes from
1. Aries e.g. Steve Ballmer (Microsoft) and Ingvar Kamprad (Ikea)
2. Aquarius e.g. Oprah Winfrey.

The least percentage is Sagittarius which comprises of 6%. The report says it is because these people lack teamwork and do not look into details of their plans. However they are creative people with ideas actually. The most notable examples would be Stephen Spielberg and Arnon Milchan.

And if you are wondering, Bill Gates is a Scorpio.

I’m thinking maybe I should team up with a Sagittarius friend since I see details and they don’t? That reminds me, I wonder my lost “business” partner is which horoscope.. long time never contact him already haha. Definitely not Sagittarius! Our co-operation in past school projects was not a perfect match. But is times when I’m sick of being an employee that I will remember what he taught me about business.

Danger of overworked doctors

“My Paper” today has an article on the “Danger of overworked doctors” from “The Sydney Morning Herald Editorial”.

In this article, it is said that two-thirds of NSW hospital doctors have to clock as many as 100 hours a week. Australian Medical Association has been trying to implement a more acceptable working condition for these doctors for five years. But the culture is too deep-rooted to be uprooted that easily.

The tragic thing is the only victim here are the patients. After 17 hours awake, our judgement and performance are as impaired as a driver who cannot drive because his alcohol level is above the limit. And mistakes will occur. However in the medical world, mistakes cannot be tolerated because of the grave consequences.

I once asked my friend why it is so tough for her to get into a medical school in Australia. I remembered she gave me some reason which I was not convinced but did not persist. But this article makes me saw light of the situation. Long hospital shifts are the result of shortage of staff. But the doctors either resist transferring some medical duties to the senior nurses or object opening more university places for medicine.

Now I understand why Singapore does not have this scenario. In fact I’m glad that the government even welcomes TCM and is willing to incorporate it into university curriculum. Of course I wouldn’t say it is easy to get into NUS Medical Faculty, but I’m sure it is definitely much easier than in Australia.

I sincerely do not wish to be treated by an overworked doctor.

CUSTOMER SERVICE EXCELLENCE

It's a half day course day today... and the topic is
"CUSTOMER SERVICE EXCELLENCE"

At first I thought I would not blog this course because there would be nothing to write about. I thought this course relies more entirely on your actions, your mentality. And such things are hard to be conveyed through the power of words. However the instructor brought out certain points that are very thought-provoking.

If communication is made up of
1. Words (Literal words e.g. emails, letters)
2. Tone (Speech, Telephone conversation)
3. Body Language (Face to face conversation)
How much percentage will you put for each of them to make up a total of 100%?

Research shows that
1. Words = 7%
2. Tone = 38%
3. Body Language = 55%

Thus when you receive an email from a friend, who says he is fine, there is a possibility that he is actually not fine. But you will never know unlike if you face him and ask him how he is feeling.

To provide good service, I concluded that one must
1. Be courteous
2. Listen attentively and ask the right questions
3. Be sincerely compassionate
4. Eager to learn and upgrade
5. Take responsibility and apologise
6. Always thanks the customer for giving their feedback

When you provide quality service, the main aim is you will feel good about yourself. When you see someone’s problem was solved, you will feel happy and accomplished. That is something I realised while supporting my systems. That is something I hear often too from my friend who used to work in call centre.

And if at the end of the day, the customer is still unable to appreciate your kind hospitality, you should not feel put down and demoralised. You should not let this customer darken your day. You should not feel that service staff is taken for granted. And you should not let this feelings affect the next customer that you are facing.

I have always wondered why I end my emails with a Thank you even when a customer was reporting an error. But now I realised that I had subconsciously be doing the right thing because I was indeed grateful for the customer for highlighting the error. Afterall it is true that majority of the dissatisfied customer will never highlight to you the problem. They will only tell another 9 of their friends that your service is substandard.

To conclude, I have indeed benefited from this course. Haha afterall I committed 4 hours there, have to get something out of it right. And it does teach me how to give VIP treatment to my internal and external customers without incurring much cost..

Restless Ramblings

Today is rambling day because I am feeling restless.

Monday I went for my company’s 2km walkathon. It was a drizzling day. Due to some hiccups, the registration took longer than usual, but this is actually a blessing in disguise. Because when it finally registered all the participants, the drizzle has stopped.

It is a refreshing experience for me because I never brisk walk 2 km. I either walk slowly, or if I’m exercising, I jog. But to walk briskly 5 rounds, seems a torture to me. Half the mental me wants to give up and walk slowly. The other half wants to break into a run to end this agony once and for all. Thank goodness I have my colleague besides me. He is a very good walker. He might be a senior citizen but I certainly have difficulty keeping up with him. Anyway at the last round, I heaved with a sigh of relief. Unfortunately I am not sure about the BMI and heart rate relationship so I’m not sure if I’m fit or not. Guess not though!

Tuesday was planned to do my school assignment day. But I ended up only drawing the GUI screen. Kind of let my group mates down. But I had been trying to amend my program to launch a system out soon for the whole day. And to continue programming seems so torturous to me. Besides it was the day a new show starts. I called it the Pilot show. And I wanted to watch it because of Flora Chan. But in the first episode, to see a lady put her whole life into fate, seems scary to me. Oh well, hopefully the next few episodes, she will matured up.

Wednesday is today. I thought through why I’m so restless. And I found the reason – Hyorin.
When I first heard the Roseline story, I felt sad. When I heard it a second time, I felt pain.
When I first see her encounter with the queen, I felt sympathy. When I saw it the second time, I felt hurt.
When I first witness her confession to the media, I felt helpless. When I witnessed it a second time, I felt despondent.

And I finally realised why I’m so affected by Hyorin. I felt I understand her when she rejected the prince’s proposal to fulfil her dream. I felt I understand her when she started to regret when the prince is with someone. I felt I understand her when she is determined to bury her love.

There are of course other things I don’t agree with her, the crying over spilt milk part, the wanting to get it back part, the committing suicide part, and the waiting part. Basically human are greedy by nature. We wish to fulfil our dreams, to have our freedom, to have independence and to be loved too. But sometimes, love and dreams cannot co-exist. Then what should we choose? To be a ballerina or to be a princess?

[9th Nove 2006]
Restless Wednesday became Tired Wednesday by the end of the day. Work till I'm supposed to stop. After that, attended my manager's father-in-law wake. Reached home watched the taped version of Goong, bath and then I caught the tired bug. Couldn't even last for the pilot show. Oh but I'm no longer restless.. because Hyorin has found her relief. Phew!

Kelly Chen - Lover's Concerto

How gentle is the rain
That falls softly on the meadow
Birds high up in the trees
Serenade the clouds with their melody
Oh! See there beyond the hills
The bright colors of the rainbow
Some magic from above
Made this day for us
Just to fall in love
You hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be just as wonderful
Now, I belong to you
From this day until forever
Just love me tenderly
And I'll give to you
Every part of me
Oh! Don't ever make me cry
Through long lonely nights without love
Be always true to me
Keep this day in your heart eternally
You hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be just as wonderful

Lyrics - Love Paradise

You're always on my mind
All day just all the time
You're everything to me
Brightest star to let me see
You touch me in my dreams
We kiss in every scene
I pray to be with you through rain and shiny days

I'll love you till I die
Deep as sea
Wide as sky
The beauty of our love paints rainbows
Everywhere we go
Need you all my life
You're my hope
You're my pride
In your arms I find my heaven
In your eyes my sea and sky
May life be our love paradise

You're always on my mind
All day just all the time
You're everything to me
Brightest star to let me see
You touch me in my dreams
We kiss in every scene
I pray to be with you through rain and shiny days

I'll love you till I die
Deep as sea
Wide as sky
The beauty of our love paints rainbows
Everywhere we go
Need you all my life
You're my hope
You're my pride
In your arms I find my heaven
In your eyes my sea and sky
May life be our love paradise

I'll love you till I die
Deep as sea
Wide as sky
The beauty of our love paints rainbows
Everywhere we go
Need you all my life
You're my hope
You're my pride
In your arms I find my heaven
In your eyes my sea and sky
May life be our love paradise

Bflygal's comments : I was told to watch JJH's video, but I ended up only being smitten by the song. Guess Kelly Chen's voice is more mesmerising.... Everytime I hear her Lover's Concerto, it brings back a certain wistful past memory...

Blood The Last Vampire

After so many years, this is the first time I saw the korean "pin-yin" of My Sassy Girl which is "Yeopgijeogin geunyeo" and it actually means "Bizzare Girl". Troi Oi! haha. Although Sassy Girl sounds more cheeky, but at times I did find the girl’s behaviour BIZZARE! Indeed the Korean title is quiet apt.

Anyway Jeon Ji-hyeon (전지현/全智賢) will be making a new movie based on a Jap anime "Blood The Last Vampire" from Japanese animation master Oshii Mamoru. A few months ago, I knew she will be filming an English movie, but I did not know what type of movie. Thus I was surprised that the movie is actually a Jap anime but will be filmed only in English. Another thing that piques my interest is the fact that I love vampire slayers stories. Remember “My Date with Vampire” series, I simply adore Ma Xiao Ling to the extent I once thought of following her fashion sense. But I gave up in the end because I don’t have the legs. =( I am not sure what Jeon Ji-hyeon’s character, Saya is about, but I will definitely keep a lookout for it. Besides I do believe I have a friend who will tell me more =)

Lastly, I made another surprising finding of her. That her real name is Wang Ji-hyeon (왕지현/王智賢). Haha… if you know me, you know why I’m surprised!

Virga

Virga (the first syllable, which is accented, rhymes with her, and the g is hard) -- virga is moisture that evaporates in the atmosphere before it hits the ground. It may be liquid or frozen -- water or ice. The phenomenon of virga can occur at any time of year but is most common in winter, when the lower-level air is dry.

Interestingly, virga has the same root as virgule, which comes from Latin and names the oblique mark [/] often called a slash. We have all seen a driving rain that looks a lot like these "little rods."

Was looking for a phrase when I saw this word and it was love at first sight. Virga sounds so romantic to me ... I would like to see such phenomenon. Anticipating!

BANGKOK 8 - by John Burdett

When I first read the beginning, I thought it will be an interesting book because I like criminology books. And it started with a murder, where the murder weapons are drugged snakes.

But as I progressed, I felt the plot was draggy. Because it is not the typical FBI or CSI type of books where one uses technology, criminology profiling to lurk out the murderer. The real detective is a Thai cop, even though there was a female FBI detective involved. This is to highlight the differences between East and West.

In fact this is the first book I read where detective work is solved based on intuition. The detective is able to see the past lives, the karma, and the life of a person. He is what the book calls it, an arhat cop. He used to lead a very terrible childhood before he found enlightenment.

Thus this book does not have much action, but what it misses, it makes up with the culture of Thailand. It gives me new perspective of the sex trade in Thailand, of the different types of prostitutes, of the life of a country that does not use much technology compared to the West.

Towards the end, I got excited again as I got used to the detective’s way of using his intuition, his vision of seeing a person. The case was solved, but what is more surprisingly is I was left with a greater understanding of Thailand. Guess when the author wrote this book; his main objective is to share with us the flavour of Thailand, the lingo used, their perceptions of life. And he did it successfully.

Single Card Reading on 3rd Nov 06

Justice

Briefly: The time has come to reflect on the choices you have made along the way. This card shows that wrongs will be put right.

Full Reading: Whatever your past has brought to you, the time has come to reflect on the choices you have made along the way. Perhaps there were things you would rather not have done, and your are planning now to make amends for anything you would like to clear up once and for all. If there have been some people who have crossed you and brought you distress, you are now wise and mature enough to deal with it in an intelligent and abstract way. Your thoughts are on making things better and improving your relationships. If you have to go to a court of law around this time, the final decision will be one that is fair to you. This card shows that wrongs will be put right. You can assist this process by addressing those issues that had caused friction and pain in your life and make some headway towards a more harmonious relationship with those closest to you.

Bflygal's comments :
Lately I have been reflecting on my past but am unable to get any conclusion. I decided to seek tarot reading... but I did not want to be bogged by so many cards. Thus I chose a single card, and it happens to be justice. Interesting right. Considering you were actually clicking this card with your mouse. Did my guardian angel really answer my question for me? Justice. To right things. But I am still indecisive and confused.
