I asked Mother Teresa...

I was reading Mother Teresa's story, and I cried at the part she decided to leave for missionary, which in those days mean you will never see your mum again. She never did.
Mother Teresa was born 26 Aug 1910. I remember she was a Virgo. And also born in the year of dog. And I know she is my idol since I was in my secondary school.
She left home in 1928 when she was 18. What made her decide something that will pain her mum? Is just as what made Jesus go on with the cruxification. She has a link with Jesus. She can talk to Jesus. I have no idea who my GA is but whoever he is, I can sometimes hear what GA has to say to me. But I wish for a human still, to guide me properly. I can't break my mum's heart. If Jesus is a guy, then I guess I relate more to Mother Teresa who is afterall a female. To be resolved to did what she did just on blind faith alone isn't easy. Appco wanted to teach us that but I failed to believe blindly for Appco. Just as I fail to believe in VSO and ended up failing the interview. And thus I ended up in 2 churches having a one way conversation with Jesus (I did have some answer back) and Mother Teresa. Will I go back SG lost?
Weird. I always seem sleepy after typing my thoughts. At least I stop crying already.

A question for Jesus

As I stared at the cruxified statues which I had seen countless of time, I suddenly has a question for Jesus. Jesus, I asked, why did you go on with the cruxification even though you know it would break your mother's heart.
And my memories brought me back to my bible study days, the part before cruxification. Jesus has chickened out just before the betrayal day. And as he wondered aloud why was he chosen (to check reference), he knew it was his destiny to atone men's sins in hope men will learn after that. And his mum's heart has to be broken.
I asked GA, why did I fail my interview. And I got an answer to be patient. Like how I was patiently waiting for Jesus to be alone to take a photo of him. But is VSO not the answer to my destiny? Or is it not time for my destiny yet? I no longer like the lives CL and the likes lived... Of travelling and enjoying. oneself. I don't mind travelling but I want to do something useful in my travels. Not massages and shopping.
I'm tired and lost over what is my destiny. And I know I indeed dont't have the vast experience handling complicated personal relationships. God, is that an important criteria? Or have I been judged by people in their list of criteria, not my list?
I have travelled so far for an interview only to have failed it. Did I fail the interview or was I branded failure by the judges but not by myself? Can I make a balance or do I have to make my parents worry sick for me? But can I ever stop a parent from worrying?

Peaceful Warrior

Source: Wiki

I chanced upon this movie recommendation from Jane's Racing the Sahara Blog. And I must say thanks for the recommendation because I love the quotes I got there... picked a few (a lot I would say) from Wiki and etc:

Life has three rules: Paradox, Humor, and Change.
- Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste your time trying to figure it out.
- Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
- Change: Know that nothing ever stays the same.

#Someone once told me I should stop asking too much questions and accept life as what it was. But it is a bad habit that I could not shake... Why not do a compromise where I will appreciate the current moment and yet question it further? Hmm but that means you will lose focus...

There is never nothing going on. There are no ordinary moments.

##Everything happens for a reason. My trip tomorrow also happens for a reason. Whatever is the reason, I will get my answer tomorrow. But even if I don't get my answer, I have decided to just appreciate everything that has happened to me. I remember before my Italy trip, I thought everything would comes apparent to me. But I realised, that in life, nothing is ever apparent.

When you feel fear. Use the sword, take it up here and cut the mind to ribbons, slash through all those regrets and fears, anything else that lives in past or the future.
##Actually I prefer the non-violent way.. accept that fear is part and parcel of your life but do not be paralyzed by it.

There's no greater purpose than service to others.
##Hmm...

Socrates: Everyone wants to tell you what to do and what's good for you. They don't want you to find your own answers, they want you to believe theirs.
Dan Millman: Let me guess, and you want me to believe yours.
Socrates: No, I want you to stop gathering information from the outside and start gathering it from the inside.
##Look into your heart...

People are not their thoughts, they think they are, and it brings them all kinds of sadness
##No wonder people tends to be more sad than happy...

Everything has a purpose, even this, and it's up to you to find it.
##Even if you are facing an obstacle, met an accident. These are tribulations which are meant to strengthen you.

The ones who are hardest to love are usually the ones who need it the most.
##Haha this was copied for CL's reading..

Knowledge is knowing, Wisdom is doing.
##And that is why actions speak louder than words

Death isn't sad. The sad thing is: most people don't live at all.
##Yupz..

It is the journey that gives us happiness, not the destination.
##Destination may not always let me find what I am originally looking for due to changes happening when you embark the journey...

If you don't get what you want, you suffer. And even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer because you can't hold on to it forever.
##I so agree with this statement. I suffer whether I have it or not. So what is the remedy?

There is no better, you will never be better. Same way you'll never be less than anybody else.
#Same way indeed! Oh and xixiong was saying SG are haughty creatures especially in developing countries.. So sad because seriously, I don't think we are better than these people at all.. At least they lived their lives simply and happily, unlike us...

Habit is the problem. All you need to do is be conscious about your choices and be responsible for your actions.
#Habit is the best excuses I have..

A warrior does what he loves.
##You must do what your heart desires...

The last part was most memorable as it was about the friend who had wanted to learn from Dan but ended up sounding just as lost as what the old Dan was. Thinking everything is about the medal, the glory, the ego. And thus you suffer when you don't get it, and suffer when you do get it because these are transient stuff that will leave you in seconds. And all that is left behind is some gaping hole that you must fill up with.. perhaps more medals? And so I must insist never to commit the folly of beating your personal best in any events but to appreciate the journey instead (unless the route is really boring?)

Thinking of reading the book and see if I can get any pointers from it. But gosh my to-read list is getting longer. Maybe this trip, I can get some readings done? Or some bloggins? On my mobile though as I still do not have a lappie haha.

Lastly, I popped by the blog and saw an interesting calculator... Life Purpose Calculator

Saving my results for further analysis next time..
32/5
5: Freedom and Discipline
3: Expression and Sensitivity
2: Cooperation and Balance

Those on the 32/5 or 23/5 life path are here to work through issues related to independence, emotional honesty, and cooperation, finally experiencing freedom through discipline and depth of experience.

Since our life path presents hurdles to overcome, both 32/5s and 23/5s confront internal challenges, tendencies, and conflicts in areas of dependence and independence, responsibility, and honest expression of emotion. Both 32/5s and 23/5s are here to experience true freedom. The phrase true freedom implies the idea of false freedoms — for example, self-indulgence, irresponsibility, or license — when 32/5s or 23/5s insist on doing whatever they want to do, whenever they want to do it. Only those 32/5s and 23/5s who have not yet matured into a more positive expression of 5 strive for such “freedom.” The freedom sought by most 32/5s and 23/5s manifests as a drive to experience and know; this freedom entails a sense of mobility in different arenas of life — physical, mental, emotional, social, sexual, and financial. Those working 32/5 or 23/5 seek to explore opportunities and find adventure where they can, whether in life, in books, or at the movies.

Chip Conley - Measuring what makes life worthwhile

The second video link by CL which I watched last month (20th July) but only had time to blog it now. The first one was Sir Ken Robinson's Bring on learning.

In this clip, hotelier Mr Chip Conley talks about Joie de Vivie (Joy of Life). There was this quote by Robert Kennedy on the definition of GDP. It is said that GDP "measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile."

And yet GDP is the measurement metric everybody is using to measure the success of the country.

Because of it, I guess Abe Maslow makes absolute sense when he said "if the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything starts to look like a nail". Everything will just tweaks into the perspective you want it to tweaks into, because human are known for adjusting their needs into one that the society accepts.

On a trip through India, early in his reign as king, he actually was asked by an Indian journalist about the Bhutanese GDP, the size of the Bhutanese GDP. And the king responded in a fashion that actually has transformed us four decades later. He said the following: He said, "Why are we so obsessed and focused with gross domestic product? Why don't we care more about gross national happiness?" Now, in essence, the king was asking us to consider an alternative definition of success, what has come to be known as GNH, or gross national happiness. Most world leaders didn't take notice, and those that did thought this was just "Buddhist economics." But the king was serious.
I wish I can go Bhutan and see how one create the habitat for happiness to brew. Seems like it is THE HAVEN that I am looking and searching for right now. I sincerely wish I know what is the measurement to make my life worthwhile. I thought I know. But 3 days more to the trip, I started doubting if this is the path and do they want me on the path?

p/s: Still remember reading an email on "Value What is Yours!" where the story goes like this...

The owner of a small business, a friend of the Poet Olavo Bilac, met him on the street and asked him,
"Mr. Bilac, I need to sell my small farm, the one you know so well. Could you please write and announcement for me for the paper?"

Mr. Bilac wrote,
"For sale, a beautiful property, where birds sing at dawn in extensive woodland, bisected by the brilliant and sparkling waters of a large stream.
The house is bathed by the rising sun.
It offers tranquil shade in the evening on the veranda."

Some time later, the poet met his friend and asked whether he had sold the property?
To which he replied:
"I've changed my mind. When I read what you had written, I realized the treasure that was mine."

Sometimes we underestimate the good things we have,
Chasing after the mirages of false treasures.
- Poet Olavo Bilac

I don't know how authentic this story is. But I really don't want to find myself chasing after the mirages of false treasures. Maybe once again, I will just let fate decide? 4 more days and I will know the answer. At least GA has been kind to me.

Horseshoe Tarot

Past Influences

Eight of Swords

Briefly: A difficult situation to deal with.

Full Meaning: This can be a difficult situation to deal with. There may be restrictions in your life that you would like to be freed from. It is also a mentally stressful occasion that requires clarity of thinking and forethought to resolve. If you keep your wits about you and refuse to be depressed you will manage to sail through this time with flying colours and be amazed at your strength of will when you have come out of the other end of the fog and retrospectively look back on how well you handled yourself and the dilemma you had faced.
Endurance is the key to coping right now and your decisions may have far-reaching consequences. You will find you have matured throughout the process of dealing with your problems. You may have to let go of relationships and friendships and this will prove to be an unburdening for you and allow you the freedom to pursue your own goals.
Do not be dismayed by these goodbyes, for they are a necessary part of your new path to follow, unhindered by a lifestyle that had cramped your style and your latent talents.
Now you will start to blossom and to produce good works in whatever field you focus on right now. Allow flexibility in your thinking for fresh ideas and ways of doing things will open new doorways to your true destiny

The Present

Six of Pentacles

Briefly: Some financial assistance that will change the course of your destiny if you act wisely.

Full Meaning: The picture on this card shows a good looking man, very rugged up against the bitter cold, as it must be the Winter season at the time. He holds a coin in his right hand and is in the process of giving it to those who ask. There are two hands outstretched in front of him which are the hands of those in need of some financial assistance. In his left hand he holds a set of scales to balance out who receives the assistance. In the background behind him are six large pentacles, or coins, that show his wealth. If you are the person in the picture you have come a long way and are not in the position of being able to help those around you. If you are not the person in the picture, then you will seen be on the receiving end of some financial assistance that will change the course of your destiny if you act wisely. If you invest your money with prudence you may one day end up as financially secure as the one who helped you in the first place. The number six may be significant in respect to the amount received. As this number is also connected to the planet Venus, there may also be some loving encounter or experience that gives you a new outlook on life.

Hopes and Fears

The Moon

Briefly: Very deep emotions and if you are going through any big events in your life this will be a meaningful period for you and one that will be long remembered.

Full Meaning: This card depicts the Moon in the centre of the card and on either side is a dog barking in the night. There are also two castles and these are divided by a stream which has a scorpion in it. Sometimes there can be contaminated or dangerous water or liquid connected with this card. There may also prove to be differences between neighbours for one reason or another. It is as if there is something going on at night with one of the neighbours and this gets under your skin and causes friction and resentment. It can also indicate very deep emotions and if you are going through any big events in your life this will be a very meaningful period for you and one that will be long remembered. If you meet a new partner during this time, more than likely it will occur at night and be an intense and passionate liaison. Perhaps one of you is born under the Sign of Scorpio, Pisces or Cancer.

Obstacles

Queen of Wands

Briefly: You may also be about to meet someone very special with whom you fall in love with and marry.

Full Meaning: The picture on this card is of a woman wearing a crown and beautiful clothes and a robe, with a wand in one hand and a lovely golden sunflower in the other. There is an abundance of green leaves around the flower and the wand. She looks serene and calm. She is obviously a woman of considerable power and influence. She also appears warm and welcoming. She has lovely blonde hair and blue eyes. She displays an air of sophistication and strength. If you are this woman then you have truly found your destiny. If this is the woman you are about to become, then rest assured your future is secure and you will find all of your needs met. You may also be about to meet someone very special with whom you fall in love with and marry. This may develop during the warmer months of the year, as in Spring or Summer. If this is someone you know, then value her friendship, for she is loyal and trustworthy. If you are a male, you may meet this woman through a friend and become involved with her in a romantic relationship. If you are a young person, this person could be your mother or a teacher, or both.

Other's Attitudes

Four of Pentacles

Briefly: You are about to finally achieve your goal of financial security and freedom.

Full Meaning: The picture on this card shows a dark haired woman dressed in a robe and a crown on her head. She holds three pentacles in front of her and one is above her crown. Behind her is a brick wall symbolising strength, protection and safety. The pentacles of course represent her finances and how she manages them. She is shrewd, careful and very practical. She is securing her financial future and will soon be rewarded for her patience and endurance. If you are this woman you are about to finally achieve your goal of financial security and freedom. You will be able to protect yourself from the adversities of the past and gain total financial control of your life. You may also be able to teach what you have learnt to others.

Influence Around You

Queen of Swords

Briefly: Her future lies in learning to trust others again.

Full Meaning: Physically usually (though not always) tall and/or slender woman. Quite often has dark hair. Refined appearance and conservative in dress most of the time. Gracious manner. She prefers sophisticated clothing.
Personality is cautious and clever. Can be cunning, destructive and manipulative. She is often aloof and distant. She keeps her distance and puts up barriers around herself. She displays an air of unemotional responses. She may appear hard, selfish and self-controlled. Beneath her facade she hides much previous emotional pain and/or hardship. She has learnt how to survive. She is a woman alone. She is either a widow, divorced, a spinster or without a loving partner. She may have spent a long time on her own and keeps up her defences and her sword drawn to protect her at all times. She has a fondness for red roses.
She looks good in black clothing. She likes to wear expensive or perhaps antique and conservative jewellery most of the time, though sometimes she wears some bold jewels. She knows she would or could be seduced if she lets her guard down. She is not a social butterfly. She can seem to be unforgiving in some circumstances, but this is her self-defence mechanism being activated to avoid feeling pain and disturbing emotional reactions. She cries in her sleep, and little elsewhere.
She feels more in control if she can avoid having too deep feelings for anyone, lest they puncture her heart and give her reason to despair. She can become big hearted if in the right company and circumstances and when she feels safe and secure. There is hope for her and she is wise enough to know it. She is symbolic of the rose, seductive and potentially dangerous, capable of cutting the skin and making it bleed, yet the soft velvety petals can blossom into the most beautiful arrangement and captivate your heart. She is wistful and reflective, serious yet sensuous, yet always alert. She is capable of being the Goddess or the crucifier.
Occupations suited to her would be the head of a company or large organisation. Also she would make a great surgeon, doctor, police officer, dentist or anything that involves the use of sharp items or weapons. She would make a good soldier, warrior, fighter or leader of a revolution. She knows only one truth, her own.
Her future lies in learning to trust others again. She has been severely betrayed in the past by women and men alike. She may need to take a leaf out of the book of the Queen of Cups, who is more giving, loving and affectionate. She could have a love relationship but only if total trust exists. There is no room for dishonesty or lies. If she is betrayed, she severs her relationships completely and irrevocably and never goes back. Friends are cast off and not seen again should they make the mistake to betray or abuse her. Her goodwill only stretches so far and behind that she may lose some of her sense of compassion, knowing that others should learn to be more self-reliant, like herself. She may go to the extreme of cutting off her husband's head, should he betray or deceive her.
Querent's card. If this is you, then you may be being called to meet the challenge of your strengths and you will meet this head on regardless of whether this produces success or failure. Even in failure, you will learn where you went wrong and this is the ultimate lesson.
If you are not the querent and this card appears, I suggest that you make an ally of this woman, because she can be a powerful opponent if you should cross her. She is loyal and steadfast to those she gets close to, just don't mess with her, because you will wish you hadn't.

Outcome

Seven of Cups

Briefly: Someone could be confusing you or taking advantage of your good nature.

Full Meaning: The picture on this card shows seven cups and each of these has some elusive or deceptive icon in it that is advising you to look beneath the surface of situations to see what is really there. Someone could be confusing you or taking advantage of your good nature. It is also wise to check that any food or water is not contaminated as there is the element of disease or poison likely to be found lurking in these products. Even skin lotions may be productive of rashes or allergies. However, for those who are psychic, this can be a very revealing and inspiring time when your hunches pay off in a wonderful way. Some benefits are there for those who listen to their higher self and follow the guidance to a T.

Bflygal's comments:
My thoughts are in a mess right now after reading Jen does Delhi and the likes of her colleagues. Is like I expected such scenario and yet I'm doubting it. My trip to Batam probably is the wake-up call that sometimes, no matter how much you really want to help others, you are still hindered by the reality. I hate to be exploited but that trip somehow gave me a feeling of "越帮越忙". Reading these blogs, somehow I am scared, that if they do not live up to the image that I thought they are, I might just give up living already. Maybe is the fact that my ex-co is looking for me and this time the chance is something much more lucrative that I really am tempted. Because knowing my calibre, I know I need to polish up lots on my sorely lacking experience still.

Canoeing in Little India

Source: 泛舟小印度 by 佚名, 联合早报网 (Lianhe Zaobao) on 2010-8-12 13:24:01

Photographer: 洪荣兴

Actual Article as extracted:

A short and curt translation of the article:

Due to the heavy downpour yesterday, Little India turned into a pretty lake and 29 year old Mr. Hong decided it is a good day to canoe at Hougang.

Mr. Hong and his friends own a travel agency in Rowell Road which specializes in outdoor trips, fishing trips as well as canoeing trips. Thus it is no surprise that he owns a few canoes in his shop. For the past few months, he has experienced a few flash floods and in 17th July 2010, one of his fridge was damaged due to the flash flood. At that time, he told his friends, he will canoe at the next flash flood occurrence.

So when the heavy rain again caused flooding yesterday at 2.30pm, on an impulse and to honour his promise, he immediately rushed to retrieve his canoe and a life jacket and canoe to his pleasure.

This short canoe stint which lasted about 20 minutes caught the approval of a few drivers and passer-bys who gave him a thumbs up sign. As in Mr. Hong words, since the flooding has occurred, he was just taking an opportunity to lighten things and gain some memorable experiences.

Bflygal's comments:
I like this guy's impulse. Sometimes life gets too boring and since you have made a promise, why not fulfill it as chance has given you the opportunity. In fact I still remember what I discuss with my friends 2 weeks ago (when it rained heavily just as I was heading to Batam), that since Wendy keeps getting flooded, maybe they should consider a water theme for Wendy. Let the staff be in full scuba wetsuits (sorry I was not thinking of bikinis because it might get too cold) and maybe have floats around to be tables perhaps.

And if you want to read more about the flash flood, you may drop by Temasek Review here. It may be a bit sensationalized but I cannot deny it has its usefulness. I'm still trying to check its authenticity on the YOG volunteer's food.

(15th Aug 2010) It's been verified by Straits Times  that was indeed the food served to some YOG volunteers. I wouldn't say it is very terrible if we really want to compare with countries where food is scarce. I would say it is unfair though if we are seeing the food fare served to other volunteers and most importantly to the foreign athletes. I would say the source of dissatisfaction is the differential treatment certain people is subjected to. And I would say the source of my contempt lies in the fact that this is a 5.5 million SGD (taxpayer's money) worth catering contract we are talking about. I hate the feeling of being exploited.

Storm Names

And no I'm not talking about Blackberry Storm (old news considering Torch just came out recently). I'm talking about something that concerns me for the time being, the Tropical Storm Ester or International Storm Dianmu.

And the two names which refer to the same storm, made me blur for a short period before wiki cleared my confusion.

I was reading this article from HP. And it states
"Tropical Storm Dianmu formed yesterday north of the Philippines. The storm, named Ester by the Phillippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration was heading to the north away from the archipelego."
- from: Gulf Coast Hurricanes

At the same time, HP was telling me that the next storm will be called Mindulle, added to my confusion. Then wiki told me that storms have International Names i.e. Dianmu, and for the Philippines, they have the Filipino name i.e. Ester. Now that makes sense.

And so why am I concerned about this storm? Well I am heading Manila in a week's time, that's why. And I have not packed yet... no no I can't pack now either. I still got lots to do.... (hmm not supposed to blog either actually hahahaha) But I cannot resist knowing how Storm get their names. What if babies follow such name calling system too??

Moi HP Laptops craze

First stop, Sex and the City 2 which made a big hoo-huh when it switched from Mac to HP. Articles were crying aloud for THE betrayal e.g. here and here (oh I forgot about the famous CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work on a PC and that Aidan is a PC guy whereas Carrie is a Mac gal. Ok never mind that technically it is wrong to use the word PC, it should be Windows i.e. Windows vs Macintosh.)

And it showed especially for Samantha with the Touchsmart PC which I think I happened to be playing while visiting a Digital corner in Esplanade Exchange (to be blogged perhaps when Rubie is alive and photos could be edited and I have some spare time?)

HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam edition showed up too in the Abu Dhabi trip.

Then in the current Mediacorp show Unriddle that I'm interested to watch (haha once in a while, I do fancy Mediacorp productions and this one hasn't been too bad), HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam edition showed up again.

But then my ultimate favourite is still none other than this... HP Touchsmart TM2...

The descendant of HP TX2 which I had set my eyes before but decided not to buy it because it was an AMD.

My ideal specs for HP TM2
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-430UM (1.20GHz,3MB) + 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5450 switchable graphics
4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

Unfortunately the one in SG is a i3 with 2GB ram. Given that TM2 is so much prettier and irresistible and with my Rubie giving me so much problems, I just can't help wishing if only I can get my dream specs!

Dropbox official Site [register now and get 2gb worth of storage space]

Pwnstar was introducing me his dropbox which in his words is a great service considering he has already maxed out to obtain a GRAND total of 10 GB free of space.

Just want to share with my readers this free service which is gaining popularity as cloud computing gets prevalent around the world. Basically, just signing up this free service gives you 2GB worth of storage space on their sever which are as secured as the algorithms used by banks and the military.

What is so good about this storage space is that you can easily backup/share your files with anyone around the world. Simply upload the files on your own Dropbox storage space, go to Sharing and share the folder. Then simply send out invites to this folder to your friend's email and now they can access the same file. Download and upload speed are extremely fast so go ahead and share large files.

I am intending to use it to share photos and some works... once I get my Rubie to stop "ba-gonging". It has been a week and I seriously feel so handicapped that I wish I can just die now since I cannot kill Rubie. Because seriously, an IT person without a PC/Lappie is like a crippled person and isn't she better off dead than alive?

(Sidetracked: Just realised Rubie has been with me for 3 years 4 months 7 days. I wish Rubie can be with me longer though.. *cross fingers*)

So while I'm still wondering about life and death, you can consider dropping by
Dropbox official Site [register from this link and you get an additional 250mb]. Have fun sharing and backing up!

Happy Birthday Singapore

I managed to rush home in time to catch Corrine May singing the NDP 2010 song. (I admit I missed out the front part on those army and marching and MPs coming in but well better late than never right?)

And I started thinking, why did I never take it seriously to understand my National Anthem. So I decided today, I will find out what exactly is the meaning of my National Anthem.

Mari kita rakyat Singapura
Sama-sama menuju bahagia
Cita-cita kita yang mulia
Berjaya Singapura

Marilah kita bersatu
Dengan semangat yang baru
Semua kita berseru
Majulah Singapura
