It is a phenomenon where people dread returning to work or school after the weekends.
People who experience Monday blues are frequently overworked, are not passionate about their jobs, or unable to derive job satisfaction at work. Complex office politics and disharmony at the workplace can also result in staff experiencing Monday Blues.
Tips from Dr. Ang Yong Guan, Psychiatry specialist at Paragon Medical
1. Consider a career switch: Doing things that interest you can help dispel the blues
2. Exercise before going to work: Improved blood circulation helps dispel feelings of depression
3. Try to complete a task that gives you a sense of accomplishment or satisfaction on Monday
4. Maintain a healthy balance between work, rest and play
5. Take it slow on Monday: Don’t think you must complete all outstanding tasks on Mondays.
Author’s comments:
I rarely have Monday Blues. And I definitely should not be feeling it today because just this morning, I found a treasure and had wanted to blog about it. But the inefficiency of this system is spoiling whatever nice feelings I originally had. Darnz.
Maybe it is because I had place high expectations today as I had scheduled a demo for a system. And it got to be postponed because of some people’s inefficiency to solve something I feel very simple – Local time inaccurate in the server. Maybe I did not understand the full complexity of this error? Afterall I am but an ignorant little girl who does things thoughtlessly.
Anyway I was wondering if one dreads returning to work everyday, is it Everyday Blues? Oh and I’m still grateful for the treasure I found this morning, and for this timely article that reminded me one thing – Next time, I MUST walk to work. (At least I will gather more treasures and don’t feel angry for long). Hmm.. actually I think I cool down while writing this paragraph already. Just that I feels that sometimes, inefficiency is contagious, because I’m feeling a bit like that now wahahah. Charge on!
Add ons:
The article was talking about other countries and their “Monday Blues”. Very humourous..
Egypt: Blue is when matters are delayed (Like my case now) and not because there isn’t sufficient time that makes you stressed. But in Egypt, people are used to being SLOW. The guy who typed 75 wpm amazed the Egyptian.. that’s funny.
China: They LOOK FORWARD to Monday for the air con, free coffee/tea, nice environment. That is because they live in crowded houses and shared toilets. Hmm actually I do look forward to coming office lately because it is a new environment and somehow I feel quite at ease in this cosy area of mine. I guess work environment really matters and I do like this new work environment especially when I’m all alone at night or on Sunday.. nice feeling
England: Definitely a blue Monday for them because they party too much in the weekends.
India: They have a tea session where everybody has a cup of tea and 2 biscuits haha.
Japan: Shout “Ganbatte”.. especially those construction workers. Interesting!!
Korea: They have no Monday, because they work everyday. Oh no. Is that my Everyday Blue I’m talking about haha. And does that mean I will not have Monday blue soon.. haha
Brazil: They are people who work only for the sake living. And they de-stress by gossiping and flirting. And they recharge on Sundays so they will never feel blue at all.
