February's Rambling

It is rambling day today.

Lately I have been dragging myself to work. And feeling unhappy at work. And unable to find motivation to finish my program. I used to try to amuse myself. But lately, I don't even feel like amusing myself. Even reading AF's stuff doesn't interest me at all. Even though I do like Hana Kimi alot. Even emailing my colleague doesn't interest me at all.

Hopefully with the arrival of March, I will feel better? Since I saw a king fisher this morning. Haven't seen this blue little bird for quite some time. Actually I'm not sure if it is a king fisher or not also. But seeing it makes my day. And the blue sky with red streaks was a pretty sight today.

Interestingly today is Ah Sang's birthday. And they broadcast her Ye Zi (Leaf) song again. A few days ago, that song captivated me.

I love falling leaves. Maybe that is because at that point of time, they finally flew for a brief period. Yupz, I wish to fly too, even if it is for a brief period.

Wood-Fired Pizza

Quite an overdue post... Went to Al Dente @ Holland Village on my last day of the January Summer School. That was 26th Jan 2007. Oh ya, it is also considered the last Jan Summer School since next year the timetable will be a normal NUS timetable (provided I manage to make it till that far).



Anyway this place serves authentic Italian dishes and the reason why we went is because I wanted to try Wood Fired Pizza. Just curious to know what is special about it.





Indeed this pizza is so much different from Pizzahut type and hmm, I believe it is healthier too haha.

The side dish is Brushcetta with Parma Ham and sun dried tomatoes. I love sundried tomatoes. The dish was actually a pretty sight, so pretty that I forgot to take a picture. Sighz.

Zoo

At the beginning of the year, I read an editor's new year resolution and he says that one of his resolution is to visit the zoo to see Inuka. And I thought it was a good idea. Thus I decided to borrow the zoo pass from company on 5th Feb 2007 .


Thus begin the journey to the zoo.

First stop is piggies in green...

Then is pizza time in Pizzafari.




After lunch, we started watching the real animals. It so happen it is feeding time for these animals. We never really waited for the trainers to come to feed the animals because usually there will be a crowd.

Oh the white tigers were waiting for their feeding time too. It so happen we did pass by a 2nd time and saw the trainers feeding the tigers. They have an interesting way in devouring their piece of meat. One of them actually use the tree as a tool to assist him in eating. While seeing the trainer throwing the food to the tiger, it reminds me of a scene in Madagascar where the lion was being fed and showing off for the audience to see.






The only butterfly that I managed to catch is this Tree Nymph. Pretty right! Oh it has another name called "Rice Paper".


I remember ever writing an article on the bats many years ago. Most people don't like bats because they have a mistaken perception towards bats. Actually sometimes, bats do have their lovable traits. This is a Malayan fruit bat which loves fruits a lot.


I never knew the zoo has a garden and orchid section. I believe is a new addition. And I like that corner very much. Seen lots of orchids, and lots of plants e.g. cotton, chillies, pineapple etc.







Finally the reason to my visit to the zoo... Sheba ...



and Inuka. Yeah!

Lastly, the cute little sun bear saying bye hee hee! Seeing this bear reminds me of a kit kat commercial many years ago where this bear always pretend to be sleeping when tourists are looking. But when tourists look away, it immediately wake up, do a little dance, have a kit kat, have a break! Then when the tourists came back to find the bear, it immediately went back to sleep. Naughty! This sun bear seems so cute that I think it will do such a naughty trick too haha.


I was quite happy with the visit to the zoo. Wanted to go Night Safari but it started quite late and I had to work the next day so gave up that idea. Shall ask my brother for the photos since he just went Night Safari lately haha. This visit to the zoo is quite a refreshing experience. My childhood memories of the zoo is totally different from what it is now. I can only say the zoo has changed a lot. And I'm glad I get to see Inuka before he leaves Singapore. At least I fulfilled one of my resolutions.

I'm Doumeki!
XXXHOLiC character selector quiz

I finished the anime xxxHolic a few days back and liked it very much. '×××' is a place holder for the various types of "holics" (alcoholic, workaholic etc). From this series I learnt that one should not overdo anything else there will be repercussions.

The male lead, (四月一日君尋) Watanuki Kimihiro, see spirits unwillingly and wants to get rid of this ability and get back his normal life. (百目鬼静) Dōmeki Shizuka is his saviour although Watanuki don't like to stick around with Dōmeki which is normal since both are guys. However Dōmeki has a pure aura that prevents the spirits from being too close to Watanuki and Watanuki is grateful for it even though he refuses to admit it.

I’m surprised that in the character quiz, it is said that I’m Dōmeki. This guy is very mysterious and quiet, forever calm and collected. In fact I find that he is very detached and cold, but beneath him, he does show his concern for Watanuki.

The character I fell in love is (座敷童) Zashiki-warashi. She is a vestal spirit who likes Watanuki (I’m not sure why.. maybe love has no reason). But I like her because she has an aura of child-like innocence. She is prone to cry but her tears seem so pure. Haha Guess I’m too smitten by her already.

And of course I admired (壱原侑子) Ichihara Yūko a lot. She is the lady with powerful magic and someone who seems to know what lies ahead of one’s path. Her famous quote is

Coincidence is but an illusion
Everything happens by fate

Only those who has a favour to ask from her can see her shop. That was why Watanuki can see her shop because he had to seek her help to stop seeing the spirits.

The songs for the anime are nice too however I believe is because I keep hearing it and that it has lots of black swallowtail butterflies. Nice!

Art Thieves?

I have not been to Mr Brown blog for a long time. Thought I decided to see what he posted lately since I saw my brother reading it a few days ago.

And I saw him mentioning about 2 flash movies on the web:

After reading the comments posted in crookedsixpence's blog, I felt sad. I'm not sure if the maker of "The Poor Little Rich Girl" had seen the flash movie of "The Little Girl". Or had they just happen to hit upon the same idea. Because creativity is really personal, and most times, timing is the only crucial factor to define what is original.

Halfway through the comments, I gave up reading. If the maker had seen crookedsixpence's artwork, they should have given it some credit. But if they were really innocent, then the comments were too hurtful. I know Asians might tend to branded copycats by many. See the bubble tea frenzy years ago. Or the number of pirated stuff China churned out. And Japan are known for taking a particular invention and improvising it to be better ten times, hundred times. But in this world, everything is a hybrid of something. Why is it after YouTube, there are google video and peekvid? Why is it after Friendster, there are MySpace and Multiply? Because the idea is good and the idea can be better. Thus people come in to improvised the idea, to make it more powerful, more user friendly. Else everybody will just be searching using Yahoo now, instead of Google.

I'm not for copying but I know that in this digital world, nothing is original. I only asked for people to give due credits to the originals.

It so happen that before I was watching these flash movies, I was flipping an IT magazine and this particular quote caught my attention.

Cheddar Fondue

0.25 cup butter, cut into cubes
3 tbs. flour
1.5 cups milk
450 grams grated cheddar cheese
Apple slices for dipping

Instructions
Melt butter over low heat in small pot.
Add flour.
Whisk well.
Slowly add milk.
When warm, add cheese a bit at a time, stirring till melted.

GoldHeart - Celestial The Star Diamond

A year ago, GoldHeart's TV ad on Celestial caught my attention. The starry night, the male driving, the lady crying, the diamond shining. But the part that I fell in love is the song.

I search high and low but none of the forums are able to get an answer. Everybody was puzzled too. And everybody was smitten by the song too.

A year later, I saw GoldHeart's Celestial TV ad again. And coincidentally the lyrics matched a song that a friend had typed recently...

I thought maybe I had found the song that had haunted me last year. If one search the forums now, one would realise too that suddenly everybody knows the song. But somehow I felt weird. But I'm never a confident person so I thought maybe it is just me.

Coincidentally I was telling that friend about the song "Fly Me to the Moon". In some sense he had "helped" me solve the mystery. But he felt it weird too. Haha and being the expert, he found that the song had actually changed. Gosh! Remarkably he found the original TV ad.

I could only decipher the starting

That feeling came back to me again. Argh I so want that song. The next day I went to ask another friend and see if he can help out. Unfortunately he can't. But he agrees that the original song suits Celestial better. For someone who doesn't watch much TV, he had actually caught that ad and had also thought the song should be "Fly Me to the Moon".

Sighz. Some people had emailed GoldHeart about the original song last year and found that it is a non-commercial song. It was composed specially for the ad. I supposed for that year, GoldHeart had received quite alot of queries on this song. And I'm beginning to wonder did GoldHeart purposely change the song to a commercial song so that everybody can identify with it already. Maybe I should write to GoldHeart and ask them to put back the original song. It is so much more fitting. And it gives me the feeling that "Fly Me to the Moon" does not give.

Now i regret deleting my recorded version of the original song. That time, I was so in love with it I tried to record with my N70. I still remember I had just bought my N70 that period too. But the effect is not that good because of the surrounding.

Sigh Sigh! Guess I shall have to contend myself with this youtube version. But this version is so short. I want the long one. Arghh....

Bflygal's comment : Someone ask how do I define dream. For a daydreamer, dreams means a lot to me. And like the lyrics, I believe the dream I wish will come true. Gosh I feel like watching Cinderella again.

Oh ya I finally found the movie I had been thinking about for the past few weeks everytime I think about Cinderella. 偷偷爱你 which star Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Chingmy Yau Suk-Ching. Tony Leung was a successful man who turn blind temporarily in an accident. And his blindness help him found his true love, Chingmy. She is a girl who had loved him for so many years though he never once notice her at all. She is a girl who was read the Cinderella story when young and always believe her prince charming will arrive. She is a girl who finally did see her prince charming and accompany him in the streets of Hong Kong in a horse carriage style. And it is the horse carriage style scene that remains firmly etched in my memory.

Whenever I see the word Cinderella, I always remember a few shows, 偷偷爱你, Imouto yo 妹よ and Ever After. And of course the classic Disney movie - Cinderella. Nice!

Got this from an email. Agree to some points esp those on food e.g. leftover food and eating the last grain of rice but not the last piece of veggie. Oh and the cook too much because I always see the older generation either cooking too much or ta-bao (buying packed food) too much. They rather have leftover than let their guests hungry...

The song was from a Japanese drama - Tokyo Cinderella Story (Imouto yo 妹よ), that I loved to the extent I bought the VCD though I was a "poor" student that time. I was told recently that the female lead's brother had acted as YUI's character (Amane) father in Taiyou no Uta. But what I found interesting is that the female lead, 和久井映見 ( Emi Wakui ) had acted as the elder sister in the drama First Love which I was reading just a few hours ago because I was listening to the song. Anyway I like Emi Wakui very much that time for that role that I went on to watch Virgin Road. But after that, I kind of lost her. Chance encounter...

Waffles and Spaghetti

I kept seeing this advertisement "Single Men are like Waffles, Single Women are like Spaghetti". The title is quite catchy. But I did not try to get the book yet because I'm not in a reading mood lately. The last time I tried the book "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus", I got lost still.

So why am I posting? Because I like what the author says. Or rather, I like the way the author's husband think about such things. Pam Farrel is the author and her husband is Bill, someone whom she described as brilliant and practical. Bill feels that most women tends to jump from subject to subject, interest to interest. For a man, this worries them and they wish they can fix it (the woman). But to Bill, he feels there is nothing to be worried about. The woman is travelling through her life and thoughts and she is hooking her life to the man which is a compliment because she wants the man to know everything.

So if women "integrate" life, men "compartmentalize". Like the waffles.

While writing this post, I'm thinking about the 3 words "I Love You" and the significance it has on woman and on man. I'm wondering how does spaghetti mix with "I Love You", and how does waffle boxed up "I Love You". Does these 3 words mean differently to Man and Woman, or does it mean differently to different Man and Woman. Why is it that if you marry someone for 10 years, but she has never ever say "I Love You", you will feel sad? Maybe it has been expressed in other ways?

Suddenly I'm thinking if it is possible to cook spaghetti and put on top of the waffles. Hmm...

Jeon Ji Hyun Blog

Was reading my Tuesday "My Paper", and saw pretty girl, Jeon Ji Hyun, has a blog. And she wrote in English. I immediately went to check it out. I'm not sure if is really JJH writing but I feel the English has a raw feeling, and yet an earnest, sincere feeling. I can almost picture some girl trying her best to write her thoughts in another language... e.g. I'm trying to write my blog in Chinese. Only that she might feel more tough. Because at least I have been exposed with Chinese since young.

I like this phrase "月亮因太阳最美丽". Is her translator's blog. She got a translator to translate her English to Chinese content because she wish her Chinese fans can understand her thoughts too. So sweet right.

Oh ya I was saying if those posts were really penned by her, I can really feel how real she is. She wrote about her worries of being fat, of her love for handbags and that she used to be not so good in her fashion sense. Sounds very endearing.

But what shocked me was I actually heard 迷魂计 in the blog. Haha Club 183 song. Shocked! Not sure who created the playlist for her blog but I really don't expect to hear this song here.

Anyway she mentioned she love "First Love" this song too. Sighz, my memories of this song came rushing back to me. I believed everybody would have some memories of this song. Of the guy in the show. Of the teacher in the show. Nanako and her deep love, her stubborness, her determination. Something that I cannot forget even till now..

Charles Sykes Rules

I got the first 7 quotes from Ms Shenton of MyPaper and did a research. Thus I found the 11 rules came from Charles Sykes, author of DUMBING DOWN OUR KIDS. He had created this list for high school and college graduates. In his book, he talks about how the "system" may have created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair; get used to it.

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will not make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone until you "earn" both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger-flipping; they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you screw up, it's not your parents' fault so don't whine about your mistakes. Learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning your room, and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. So before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades, they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off, and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is not real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
