Generally I read this as one person has won out at the expense of two other people and they are walking away with their trophy, person or thing of value. The others have lost out and they now know it. They may feel they have been betrayed, but they weren't, it was a matter of the best one winning, and there could only be one winner in this situation. Usually this means that you are the one who is the winner

p/s: I only want to say if I did win at the expense of others, then I hope I'm given a chance to repay them.  In this life, I only want to clear my debts and ensure nobody owes me anything... so that there is no reason for recarnation for me.  Oh and I'm quite surprised by the outcome... but it did not say what happens after the help is rendered.  Hmm but it does make me wonder in this case, is it I owe him or he owe me...
